FAQs

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first appointment, sometimes referred to as an “intake appointment” lasts about 55 Minutes and typically starts with some standard paperwork. You and your therapist will discuss what concerns brought you into therapy and you may also discuss various aspects of your life including your social support, physical health, mental health history, spirituality or important beliefs. It’s ok if you feel nervous! The main goal of the first appointment is for you and your therapist to get to know each other and begin building a supportive, therapeutic relationship.

What can I expect at following appointments?

At your second appointment, we work collaboratively on identifying your goals and hopes for therapy. It’s ok if you aren’t certain about this, your therapist is there to help! Your therapist will also provide insight into what therapeutic approaches might be most helpful in supporting you to reach your goals. From here, appointments focus on meeting you where you are at! You may spend time reviewing symptoms, reflections, issues, goals, or anything else that might need attention.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take varies depending on your goals and progress. Some situations require only a few therapy sessions while others require more long-term therapy. During your first few appointments the expected length of treatment will be discussed.

I want to get the most I can out of therapy. What can I do to facilitate this?

Therapy is an active process. To get the most out of your therapy sessions regular attendance is important. It is also important to work on the skills and practices discussed in session outside of session. Your therapist may recommend certain books, videos, podcasts, practices, or other educational material that can help bring therapy topics outside of the office and into your life.
